carries with him a dew-drenched morning
smelling of tree resin and mint, while behind him trails
fog like a cloak blurring the seam of the horizon.

He comes bristled with pieces of an enemy,
wearing more of him than he does of himself.
I know what night tastes like, he whispers
in the thick air, his skin redolent of war.

In the ruby redness of dawn he returns, he
whose death wounds are crystallized by survival,
made deeper, made to heal and then, cruelly, bloom.
What battle? I ask. What war? What price was paid?

Then comes the victorious resurrection of day,
raised from a grave hollowed by river water,
breathless and gleaming, wet with life. The morning is quiet,
save for the birds who sing a symphony of waking.

It is cold, save for the concentrated heat
in the red blades of sunlight which slice fire
across my lap, garnet hollows in my unrest.
Here in the perforated shade, waiting

for the safety of summer to unbutton my coat,
I wonder at the supernal taste of that
receding world, Night.
Spring’s voice hums through me:

It tastes like river water and moss.
Like smoke from a forest fire.
It tastes like stars and blood...

Creation, I say. Night tastes like creation.

Beyond the glow of the hungry hearth
a corpse-gray frost spreads moldlike over
my walls and I can taste again the
sour sweetness of unnatural air

like a held breath before an unformed word.
I go to it, curious, searching
as I always am
for a piece of the unbaked clay of creation
that I may mold it as God molded me.
Within its paperskin body I observe
no human mechanisms of heart and lungs;
no spreading power of breath and

Moves, I observe, with life. But lifeless.
Where is its voice? With what instrument

Do the limbs of it clack in the breeze like

skin of the night. I do not want to learn

sky stitched together into one gray canvas.
I smelled clearly the ocean brine and the half-frozen earth.

There before me, I knew, the jagged cliff, its edge
the severed gap that bridged what was and what will never be
Just as sea sits at elbow of land, so death at the elbow of
memory, lapping at the edges of it, greedy, like all lonely things.

In the dream I had not met you yet, you see. I did not yet
know you to know the shape of your shoulders in the distance,
I could not recognize your bowed head, nor the color of your voice
as the wind brought it to me with fragments of your mournful song

that wove with the wind through the heather and broke
with the ocean against the rocks below. In my dream
I did not know you.
