I thought Éna Lí would be the most irritating character yet, however I do say Balo has to join the list.. is that how you treat your wife of 30 years of marriage ??

I do find myself rooting for someone to assassinate the pair of them, yes.

Wonderful narrative in this chapter. Rich, tactile, enticing. Beautifully crafted Hilary.

I'm dying to know what the king's note said. Or did I miss it?

Hilary Layne's avatar

No you didn’t! (But I shan’t say anything else…)

My money is on it being misdirection. The king had to know Sonen wouldnt be the only one to read it.

I don't know what to say...

That was a wild ride.

Maybe Olo Hin and Ban Lo can have a coffee chat sometime...

I keep forgetting to mentioned this with every chapter I read but, Hilary...why is every man's wife dead?????!!? So far only the wives of Nol, Balo are the only ones left,.though whether they remain alive is debatable. And Ola Lin's not married yet, is there any hope for her?

Well, Ŏvor's wife is alive. As is Ban Lo's. And there are other living wives, they just haven't been introduced yet.

(Most widows and widowers do not remarry if they already have children. Some might be obliged to by their House given the high infant mortality rate. But if a union has already produced children, it is rare for the living spouse to remarry.)

Great, so there's still hope. Love to see such indepth world building, or rather how your worldbuilding manifests through the simplest aspects of the story. How much of your building is based on the culture and history?

Hilary Layne's avatar

All of it! I didn't want there to be anything arbitrary so any detail of the world had to have some basis in history and culture.

Hilary, thank you for this instalment. I think your writing has incredible clarity that I think comes from talent and also very careful editing, a kind of bell-like clarity that you just don't find these days in people's writing. It allows you to depict complex scene machinery that is effortless to read at each scene comes across with luminous intensity. I know that unsolicited critique or queries or suggestions are not particularly welcome to people but if you would be interested to have just one of mine, I would be more than happy to give it to you. Thank you for your hard work, I hope you have great success.
